The Age of Miracles 12: Woke up tomorrow

12. If you woke up tomorrow to the news that the rotation of the earth had significantly slowed, how do
you think you would respond? What is the first thing you would do?

  1. If I woke up tomorrow to the news that the rotation of the Earth significantly slowed, my actions and thoughts would be based off of the way I got the news and also probably how others, such as my parents, were reacting. For example, if I had just gone downstairs, turned on the television, and saw the news, I would have probably been under the impression it was fake and move on with the day. If I went downstairs, saw the newspaper saying, “THE WORLD IS SLOWING”, and my family seemed to be ignoring it, I would be slightly concerned but not make a big fuss over it since my parents weren’t. If my parents had woken me up, told me the news, and seemed frightened, I would have been a lot more concerned. I would be asking my parents a lot of unanswerable questions including “Why is this happening?” “What are we going to do?” and “Are we going to live?” The first thing I would probably do is want to be alone and able to think about the situation at hand, pay attention to the news, then call all of my family members and friends, making sure they were okay and safe. Either that or I would go outside and enjoy my yard, grass, and sunshine. It’s horrible to think about what you would do in a situation like this, but these would be my first instincts.

    1. I agree with Colleen’s opinion. My reaction would all depend on perspective and how that news is presented to me. If my parents told me personally, I would be concerned. But if they showed it like any other news, I would not really have taken it seriously. I also would end up asking those questions at the end, though I would really want to get those answers, whether it’s from my parents or from online. I especially will show concern for my long-distant relatives in an awful situation like this. My opinion is to always look up and keep a positive attitude through any tough problem.

  2. If I woke up and heard on the news that the rotation of earth had significantly slowed, I would be very concerned and very scared. Like Julia’s mother I would definitely go to the grocery store and buy lots of food and water to keep just in case it got to the point where we couldn’t go to the grocery store anymore, or grocery stores were running out of food. Since in the book Julia did not know how bad the slowing would eventually be and how many hours would eventually be in one day, she did not know to appreciate the first few days when the slowing had not changed their everyday life schedule too much. If I were to hear the rotation of earth had significantly slowed I would take advantage of the beginning days of the slowing and appreciate what I have for as long as I could. Even if the changes were not this drastic there are things in my everyday life that I should appreciate more.
One of the first things I would do is go to the grocery store and stock up on lots of canned food and water. At one point in the book it comes to the place where they could only go out in the dark because the sun was too bright and could seriously damage their bodies. If the sun was out for a really long time and you couldn’t go to the store, but you really needed food that could be a real problem. Another reason why I would go right to the grocery store to get food is because at some point everyone is going to realize they should stock up on food. If everyone is buying lots of food at the same time, the grocery store will eventually run out. I want to be one of the first people to get the food so I won’t have a problem getting enough food for my family.

    1. I agree with Kara on being concerned. After reading The Age of Miracles, I would've immediately thought of the book and what happened a few weeks after the slowing. All other life on Earth pretty much unraveling, all those species dying, and then imagining our world like that would scare me. I also like Kara's point on being the first to get to the grocery store. In the book, Julia's mother was one of the first to get to the store, and her family never had any problems with food or starvation. They were very well off because they had previously stocked up. Once other people realize the damage that the slowing will cause then they will be trying to stock up, and the stores could easily run out. I also find it interesting how she said that since Julia did not know to appreciate things the first few days, that she would. If our Earth started slowing, we could learn from the mistakes, and good steps, made in the book, not only with appreciating the small things, but maybe also finding a better way to install clock time, or finding a better alternative like clock time.

    2. I agree with Kara about the initial reaction that I would have been concerned if I was not previously prepared for the disaster. After my first reaction, I would progressively become less worried about the whole idea of the slowing. I would think that I would eventually learn to enjoy the dark days and bright nights. If it were a dark day, you could go places with your friends and mess around. All in all I think that I would be very concerned first, then I would live everyday like my last and learn to enjoy the changes.
