Sombo is one of the Khmer Rouge. Arn learns Sombo still has a sense of morality when he asks Sombo why Sombo doesn’t kill him for stealing food. Sombo responds by telling Arn how he once was someone who had no food, and sometimes had to do things he often regretted just to obtain food. Sombo only spares Arn’s life because he gave the stolen food to other people in need of it and did not take it for himself. Arn begins to like him, but throughout the story Arn’s feelings for Sombo bounce back and forth from happy to mad. He gets mad at Sombo for things Sombo did to protect him. Arn just thought Sombo didn’t care about him anymore. After a while, each time Arn realizes Sombo was protecting him, he realizes that whatever Sombo did last, it was to save Arn from any punishment, especially death.
